Retina is a light sensitive film present at the back part of the eye. The image was perceived here & transmitted to the brain with the help of optic nerve. The vitreous is a clear gel that will fills the back part of the eye.
Diseases to the retina can affect any age group. Premature infants may also affected by a disease called - ROP (Retinopathy of pre-maturity). Heredity & age related degenerations may affect the retina - particularly the central most sensitive part of the retina is called 'macula'. The retina may detach from the back portion of the eye - this condition is called 'Retinal Detachment'. The Vitreous gel may become opaque because of blood - this condition is called 'Vitreous hemorrhage'. This condition may occur in diabetics following injury & in other conditions also.
Retinal & vitreous surgery address problems like Retinal Detachment & Intraocular Infection. Retinal & vitreous problems will cause severe loss of the vision or even blindness. In certain cases, surgery will be beneficial; if it was done at the right time. This prevents severe loss of vision. Most of the serious retinal problems which require surgery were caused by problems with the vitreous.
