Dr. Tony's School Of Optometry, Aluva.

Dr. Tony's School of Optometry, a teaching and training institution under the charitable trust, STF Charities, is run by Dr. Ton'y Fernandez Eye Hospital, Aluva. Dr. Tony's School of Optometry is affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences, Thrissur (KUHS) for the B.Sc.Optometry course from 2017. It offers the Bachelor of Science in Optometry (B.Sc. Optometry), an undergraduate, full time paramedical course, of 4 yrs duration which includes a 1 year internship. There are 30 students per academic year.

Optometry is a health care profession that deals with the examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of eye diseases and disorders of the visual system. It includes the science of eye equipment (including lenses and spectacles). It is a dynamic and challenging career that allows one to help people, achieve career and personal growth and community respect. It offers job flexibility, financial success and unlimited opportunities.

Scope and Objectives of Course

The Course aims at carving out graduates in Optometry who will be well versed in

  • Helping the Ophthalmologist in his practice
  • Doing refraction, contact lens fitting and orthoptic assessment independently
  • Being involved in and doing special investigative procedures
  • Operating and maintaining Ophthalmic instruments
  • Maintaining Ophthalmic theatre and Instruments
  • Running and establishing an Optical shop

The syllabus covers the study of the human visual system, its disorders, and their management. It includes the following subjects:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the eye
  • Optics and refraction
  • Visual optics and perception
  • Ophthalmic lenses and dispensing
  • Contact lenses and orthokeratology
  • Binocular vision and Squint
  • Low vision and rehabilitation
  • Ocular pharmacology and therapeutics
  • Clinical optometry and case analysis
  • Community optometry and public health
