Dr. Saju Thomas
D.O., D.N.B., MS, FRCS

Dr Saju Thomas started his academic career by completing his MBBS at Government Medical College Jabalpur in 1991. He then joined for Ophthalmology training at the Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore.  He completed his Diploma in Ophthalmology in 1995 and Master of Surgery in Ophthalmology from CMC Vellore in 1998 with award for Best outgoing student.

He then joined the Christian Medical College as a Lecturer and Consultant in Retina and Vitreous for 3 years and became a Senior Lecturer in 2001.  During this period, he obtained additional qualifications of Diplomate of the National Board (DNB) and the FRCS from the Edinburgh College.

In 2001 he joined the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK as a Fellow in Vitreoretinal surgery. Following completion of fellowship, he joined for Advanced Subspecialty Training in Ophthalmology in Medical Retina and Uveitis at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. 

He then worked in UK at the County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust for 16 years as a Consultant in Ophthalmology with special interest in Vitreoretinal Surgery and Medical Retina during which he received 4 Clinical Excellence awards. He was Head of Department (Clinical Lead) for 2 and half years and was College Tutor for Post Graduate Training for 6 years.

He has keen interest in research in Macular Degeneration and was Primary investigator for 4 multicentre research studies in UK and has 12 publications. 

He has 27 years of experience in doing Vitreoretinal surgery. In addition, he is an excellent anterior segment surgeon with more than 10,000 cataract surgeries and does Multifocal, Toric lenses and complex anterior segment surgery.
