The reasons are plenty as to why you should set limits on your child’s screen time. Encourage them to have outdoor play and healthy activities instead. Why because, fostering healthy habits including right sleep not just have health benefits but also promotes in-person social relationships.
But these days, with most time of our lives lived in front of screens, whether it’s for work, school, entertainment, or socialization, – how as a parent can you set realistic limits and guidelines for your children?
Take note of the adverse effects that screen time can cause to a child's eyes
Eye fatigue
Also known as asthenopia includes eye discomfort, dimness of vision and headache.
This is caused by prolonged focus on a screen. Additionally, the glare on the screen can further strain the eyes. Eye fatigue can also make them loose interest in reading and doing other activities.
Dry and irritated eyes
Long stretches of screen use can also make the child's eye dry and irritated. Long hours on concentration on the screen is the reason. A clear and stable tear film on the eye surface is essential for clear vision. But when a child uses excess screen time, the problem worsens.
Loss of focus flexibility
When your child's eyes stay focused close-up for long periods, it makes it difficult for them to adjust to distant vision later. Usually it should be a short-term problem, and the eyes should be able to adjust back to their normal flexibility. But if the problem persists, it's mandatory to consult an expert.
Nearsightedness
UV light plays an important role in healthy eye development. But with children who spent all time indoors in front of the screen, the development will have impairments as they lack exposure to healthy UV light. This in turn can lead to nearsightedness or myopia.
Things you can do
Excess or prolonged screen time, not just affects your child's eyes, but can have other health implications as well.
Aside from reducing the screen time and making them involved in productive activities, you must make it a practice to set time for their routine eye checkup.
Make sure your child is getting either the annual vision screening provided at school, or schedule for a vision screening at the hospital.
