Neuro-ophthalmology deals with oriented subspecialty that merges the fields of both ophthalmology & neurology, generally deals with complex systemic diseases which are manifestations in the visual system.
Common pathology referred to Neuro-ophthalmologist with some associated disorders that includes afferent visual system disorders like: optic neuritis, papilloedema, , brain tumors or strokes, optic neuropathy & efferent visual system disorders like: anisocoria, ptosis, nystagmus, diplopia, ophthalmoplegia, blepharospasm & hemifacial spasm.
Neuro-ophthalmology mainly focuses on diseases of nervous system which affecting the vision, control of eye movements or pupillary reflexes. Neuro-ophthalmologists will be trained to perform eye muscle operations to treat disorders like adult strabismus, optic nerve fenestration for idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and botulinum injections for blepharospasm or hemifacial spasm.
In Neuro ophtalmology department Neuro-ophthalmologists will take care of visual problems which are relates to nervous system; that is, visual problems that won’t come from the eyes themselves. We utilize almost half of the brain for the vision-related activities, which includes sight & moving the eyes.
