Post Cataract Surgery - Do's and Don'ts

Date :24-Feb-2023

Vision loss from cataract is highly common. Thanks to cataract surgery, which now, more and more people are opting for today as safe, frequently conducted, and painless too.

Post cataract surgery one can be assured of a better lifestyle with the visual clarity longed for years. Still, the person needs to be mindful of giving themselves ample time to recover while following the post-operative recommendations provided by their doctor.

Below are a few things to remember as recovering from cataract surgery.

How long to rest after cataract surgery?

When compared to other notable eye surgeries, the recovery time from cataract surgery is relatively quick. Though each person heals differently, most of them report drastically better vision within the first 24 hours of the procedure. 1 to 3 days’ rest, off the work, will suffice and normally one can resume activities within a couple of days.

But since the healing process will take some time, your vision may fluctuate slightly for the first few weeks before fully stabilizing. The eye will be structurally healed from surgery in approximately one month, but it is best to allow your doctor to determine when the recovery is complete.

As the eye heals, there are a few things to consider in the first two weeks after surgery that will help recovery time:

  • Do not drive until after the first day following your surgery
  • Do not perform strenuous activities like heavy lifting.
  • Do not swim or use a hot tub to help prevent infections.
  • Do not rub the eye.
  • Do not wear eye makeup.
  • Do not expose the eye to dust, wind, pollen, and dirt.
  • Do not forget to wear sunglasses on bright days.

How to sleep after cataract surgery?

The protective shield provided for your eye should be worn during sleep (even naps) for at least the first week after your cataract surgery. This helps to avoid rubbing your eyes and/or causing an accidental injury to your eye while it is in the recovery phase.

Apart from the eye shield, there isn’t a need for significant changes to your sleep routine. If eye pain or discomfort is affecting sleep, you should address it with your doctor to help determine potential solutions or treatments.

How to wash your face after cataract surgery?

Avoid exposing your eye to direct water contact for at least a week. You may resume washing your face the day after your surgery but be careful to not touch your eye. Do not splash water directly on your face. If possible use a washcloth to carefully clean your face.

It is important to continue to be diligent about not getting water in your eye during the initial recovery period.  Hence, have your eyes closed when washing your face and avoid rubbing the healing eye.

What foods to avoid after cataract surgery?

Focusing on a diet that is beneficial to your overall health and including fibre-rich whole foods, leafy green vegetables, and lean protein is the best, post-cataract surgery. Avoid foods that are high in sugars or are high in refined carbohydrates (such as bread, pasta, chips, cereals, etc.), because, these foods can spike blood glucose levels in the body and can lead to damaging blood vessels in the eye, ultimately slowing down your recovery time after surgery. So, ideally, avoid processed foods and foods that are broadly considered to be “junk food.”

Conclusion

It is important that you do what you can to help the process go smoothly as your eye goes through the recovery phase from cataract surgery. Following your post-operative instructions, avoiding strenuous activity, and protecting your eye from debris and physical contact will help you on your way to a healthy eye and much-improved vision.
