Watch out for This Silent Killer - Glaucoma

Date :05-Jan-2023

Glaucoma is a ‘silent killer,’ because it is a tricky disease that creeps in silently and produces no symptoms in its early stages. For this reason, glaucoma is commonly known as the sneak thief of sight as it causes irreversible blindness.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of diseases where the pressure builds up and damages the eye’s optic nerve and is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness. The optic nerve sends visual information from your eye to your brain and is vital for good vision. Damage to the optic nerve is often related to high pressure in your eye. But glaucoma can happen even with normal eye pressure.

Glaucoma doesn’t show any early symptoms and that’s why half of the people with glaucoma don’t know they have it.

Getting regular eye exams is one of the ideals means to make sure that your eyes are keeping well. Glaucoma can be checked by doing a comprehensive dilated eye exam. Though there’s no cure for glaucoma, early treatment can often stop it from damaging the vision.

Who are at risk?

Anyone can get glaucoma, but some people are at higher risk, including people who:

  • Are over age 60
  • Have a family history of glaucoma
  • High internal eye pressure, also known as intraocular pressure
  • Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, migraines, high blood pressure, and sickle cell anaemia
  • Corneas that are thin in the center
  • Extreme near-sightedness or far-sightedness
  • Eye injury or certain types of eye surgery
  • Taking corticosteroid medicines, especially eye drops, for a long time

Be aware of the symptoms

The symptoms of glaucoma depend on the type and stage of the eye condition.

  • No symptoms in the early stages
  • Gradually, patchy blind spots in the side vision, which is also known as peripheral vision
  • Difficulty seeing things in the central vision, in the later stages
  • Severe headache
  • Severe eye pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Halos or coloured rings around lights
  • Eye redness
